Chapter 18

Christie and I met at Boreal Beanery the day after my visit to Grace’s apartment. We chose a table near the window, overlooking Heritage Street, while we waited for Sarah to deliver our iced lattes and scones. Only a day away from our second attempt at an opening, and this time I was feeling pretty relaxed. What could be worse than our first try?

I settled myself into a chair, allowing myself a moment of respite from the investigation. Sitting with Christie across from me was easy in a way some relationships could never be. Just then, Sarah arrived with our order.

“Hey, Sarah. Do you have time for a coffee break?” I asked. “Come and join us.”

Sarah glanced around the coffee shop. “I’d love to. Give me ten minutes, okay?”

Christie and I nodded and reached for our iced lattes.

“Everything going well with Sofia?” Christie asked, taking a sip. I appreciated Christie’s concern for my daughter. She was practically Sofia’s aunt, and was much cooler than I was, so win-win.

“Yeah, I think so. I love having her here so much, and she’s been like magic for Nordic Cozy. She revamped the website, and she’s making regular social media posts. My mom is thrilled. I just worry, you know.” I leaned back in my chair and stared at the fresh flowers Sarah had displayed in a mason jar. The scent of lilacs was so lovely.

“What are you worried about?” Christie asked. “Sofia’s doing great. Her socials for Hygge House are amazing.”

I grinned. “Yeah, she really knows her stuff. I’m happy she’s home, but this wasn’t her plan.” I bit into my scone. Delicious.

“I’m sure it will work out. It takes time for kids to land on their feet after graduation.”

I nodded. “That’s true. I’m lucky I can help her out. No, I’m not worried about that so much. In fact, I secretly hope she stays longer. I’ll miss her when she leaves.”

“What’s bothering you, then?” Christie’s eyebrows creased, and she leaned over the table, her latte cupped in both hands.

“It’s more about this case. No one has been arrested yet.” I glanced around the coffee shop, but there was only an older couple waiting for their order and a pair of teenagers totally absorbed in their phones. They wouldn’t hear me talk about the murder, even if I raised my voice.

Christie tilted her head to the side and gave me one of her quizzical looks. “I thought Detective Whitford told you not to get involved?” She smiled knowingly.

“Haha,” I replied. “I don’t have a choice anymore.”

Sarah arrived, pulled up a chair from a nearby table, and sat down with a satisfied sigh. “Brian can handle the front for a while. I need girl time.” She motioned to Brian, and a few minutes later, he delivered Sarah a coffee.

“Prepared just the way you like it, my lady,” he said, presenting it to her with a flourish. We all laughed, and Brian headed back to the counter.

“He’s a keeper,” I said, admiring their playful relationship.
